Walk

Walking for Self-CareDay Nine’s Challenge:
Take a walk.

Wow, we’re almost a third of the way through the challenge. I know that every day you’ve been looking in the mirror, smiling, saying “I believe in myself.” You’re drinking plenty of water, breathing mindfully when stressed or anxious, and noticing the beauty around you. Today we’re going to get moving with another challenge that should work its way into your daily routine.

Take a walk.

Aim for at least fifteen minutes, but if all you can squeeze in is a one minute walk to the mailbox, do so with purpose. Breathe deeply. Be attentive to the sounds and smells around you. If a warm, grassy area is within walking distance, then walk there and kick off your shoes. Wriggle your feet in the grass. Feel the Earth beneath your feet – literally. You love your body and you choose to take care of it. Walking is a great way to do just that.

Other ideas for finding walking time in your busy day: park further away, take the stairs, or get off the bus a stop early. This is a great activity to do with co-workers or family or friends who are as enlightened as you about the importance of self-care.

The point of this challenge is to be mindful that walking is a way you are caring for your body. You will find the time – even if it is piece-meal throughout the day, to walk with the purpose of taking care of you. It’s really that simple: even a short walk from your desk to the copier is more mentally beneficial if you are thinking about the benefits as you make that walk!

That leads me to another great proclamation that can be added to the Self Care Manifesto:
I believe I am beautiful, therefore I walk.
